Melodic Pattern Extraction in Large Collections of Music Recordings Using Time Series Mining Techniques
نویسندگان
چکیده
We demonstrate a data-driven unsupervised approach for the discovery of melodic patterns in large collections of Indian art music recordings. The approach first works on single recordings and subsequently searches in the entire music collection. Melodic similarity is based on dynamic time warping. The task being computationally intensive, lower bounding and early abandoning techniques are applied during distance computation. Our dataset comprises 365 hours of music, containing 1,764 audio recordings representing the melodic diversity of Carnatic music. A preliminary evaluation based on expert feedback on a subset of the music collection shows encouraging results. In particular, several musically interesting relationships are discovered, yielding further scope for establishing novel similarity measures based on melodic patterns.

متن کاملMining Digital Music Score Collections: Melody Extraction and Genre Recognition
In the field of computer music, pattern recognition algorithms are very relevant for music information retrieval (MIR) applications. Two challenging tasks in this area are the automatic recognition of musical genre and melody extraction, having a number of applications like indexing and selecting musical databases. One of the main references for music is its melody. In a practical environment o...
متن کاملA Method for Comparative Analysis of Folk Music Based on Musical Feature Extraction and Neural Networks
A common problem in comparative musicology and ethnomusicology is that large collections of music are difficult to classify and visualize. Therefore, a tool which could be applied to either acoustic signals or symbolic representations would be useful. The choice of the features that are extracted from a collection of music and subsequently used by the tool should be psychologically relevant for...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Music Recordings from Western and Non-Western traditions by Automatic Tonal Feature Extraction
The automatic analysis of large musical corpora by means of computational models overcomes some limitations of manual analysis, and the unavailability of scores for most existing music makes necessary to work with audio recordings. Until now, research on this area has focused on music from the Western tradition. Nevertheless, we might ask if the available methods are suitable when analyzing mus...
متن کاملVisualization in Comparative Music Research
Computational analysis of large musical corpora provides an approach that overcomes some of the limitations of manual analysis related to small sample sizes and subjectivity. The present paper aims to provide an overview of the computational approach to music research. It discusses the issues of music representation, musical feature extraction, digital music collections, and data mining techniq...
